A River Sutra
| By
Gita Mehta adapted by Tanika Gupta
Based on the book by Gita Mehta,
A River Sutra was directed by Indhu Rubasingham.
It is set on the banks of the River Narmada and
follows the physical and spritual journeys of the
characters whose stories come together by the river.
A National Theatre Studio production,
A River Sutra was staged in a cavernous former warehouse
building in east London and presented a number of
physical challenges for the sound design. The riverbank
set extended almost forty metres and the audience
were seated on the "ground" along its
entire length.
Despite the massive volume of
the building, the design required both sounds of
high intensity across the whole auditorium - a huge
rainstorm that passes over the heads of the audience
and a parade of elephants that moves, unseen across
the stage - and very subtle effects that had to
be located from specific, identifiable points in
space.
This sound design was a collaboration
with Richard Shannon.
